2023/2024 Preliminary Operating Budget
The Quesnel Board of Education announced plans for a balanced budget for the 2023/24 fiscal year at the May 17 Regular Board meeting. The Annual Budget Bylaw is set at $50,623,514.
Before the consideration of requests, the District anticipates an operating surplus of $165,150 for the 2023/24 school year. This was after the reversal of the one-time surplus expenditure plan implemented for the 2022/23 school year and budget adjustments for staffing and supply changes.
The Board solicited feedback and ideas from Partner Groups, Aboriginal Education Council, the Quesnel District Teachers Association, CUPE 4990, and the Quesnel Principals and Vice Principals Association, on how best to invest these dollars for the upcoming year. The Board of Education hosted a public meeting to understand the community’s priorities as well. The following needs were identified by departments and stakeholder groups for the next school year:
- Support Services Staffing $223,000
- Principal Staffing $233,400
- Curriculum/Numeracy Teacher $111,500
- Mental Health and SOGI Leads $ 66,900
- Indigenous Education Staffing $281,700
- Other $ 94,400
The investments above amount to $1,010,900 and will be covered in part by the anticipated $165,150 surplus (before requests) and the remainder through the accumulated operating surplus funds.
The Board of Education is pleased to be making investments to benefit the students and staff of the Quesnel School District for the 2023/24 school year.
